Service overview

## What Is Lead Work?

Lead work is the waterproofing at the joins on a roof: flashings where the roof meets a wall or chimney, lead-lined valleys where two slopes meet, and chimney lead. Ericht Roofing carries out flashings, valleys, chimney lead work and specialist lead work, including Level 1 lead welding.

### Who it's for
It's for homeowners with leaks around chimneys, damp patches on chimney breasts or walls next to the roof, failing valleys, or lead that has cracked, lifted or been stolen.

### When you need it
You need lead work when you see damp appearing around a chimney breast, when lead flashings are loose or cracked, when valleys are letting water in, or when a roof is being replaced and the lead needs renewing too.

### Why professional help matters
Many roof leaks don't come from the slates at all; they come from the joins. Lead needs to be dressed and fixed correctly to shed water. Julie L. described the team as 'extremely good at their job'.

The cost of waiting

## What Happens If It's Ignored

Failed lead lets water run straight into the most vulnerable parts of a roof: the junctions. Because it enters at a join, it often shows up somewhere unexpected inside.

### Risks and damage

- Damp patches on chimney breasts and walls beside the roof.
- Water running into roof timbers at valley junctions.
- Internal plaster and decoration damaged, often repeatedly.
- Sealant 'fixes' that fail and hide the real problem.

### Common mistakes

- Covering cracked lead with mastic or tape instead of renewing it.
- Assuming a leak near a chimney must be the slates.
- Leaving loose flashings that let wind drive rain behind them.
- Hiring someone without lead experience for detailed chimney work.

Our process

## How Craig Does the Job

- 01
### Step 1 – Inspection
Craig visits, looks at the roof himself and takes photos so you can see what he sees.

- 02
### Step 2 – Diagnosis
He explains what's wrong, what it will take to fix, and gives you a clear, free, no-obligation quote.

- 03
### Step 3 – Service execution
Failed lead is removed and new flashings, valley linings or chimney lead are dressed, fixed and, where needed, welded.

- 04
### Step 4 – Testing and checks
Every lead detail is checked to make sure it sheds water away from the junction before the job is signed off.

- 05
### Step 5 – Completion and guarantee
The site is left tidy and the work is backed by a guarantee of up to 15 years.

In detail

## Lead Work: The Detail

### Lead flashings
Flashings seal the gap where a roof meets a vertical surface such as a wall, dormer or chimney. When they crack or come loose, water runs straight behind them.

### Lead valleys
Where two roof slopes meet, a valley carries a large volume of water. Lead-lined valleys need to be laid correctly to cope with it.

### Chimney lead work
Chimneys have several lead details: front apron, side flashings and back gutter. Any one failing can cause damp on the chimney breast inside.

### Specialist lead work and Level 1 lead welding
Craig carries out specialist lead work, including Level 1 lead welding, for details that need more than standard dressing.

### Lead work across Perthshire and Angus
Lead work is carried out in Perth, Blairgowrie, Dundee, Pitlochry, Alyth, Coupar Angus, Aberfeldy and surrounding areas.

### How lead keeps water out
Lead is used at the junctions of a roof because it can be shaped to fit around chimneys, walls and valleys and it lasts. It works by directing water away from the join and onto the roof covering. When lead cracks, lifts or is fixed badly, water runs behind it instead.

### Chimney details
A chimney has several lead details working together: an apron at the front, stepped flashings down the sides, and a back gutter behind. If any one of these fails, you may see damp patches on the chimney breast inside, often some distance from where the water is getting in.

### Why sealant isn't a fix
Mastic and tape are sometimes used to cover cracked or lifted lead. They can hold for a short while but break down in sunlight and frost, and they often hide the real problem until more damage has been done. Renewing the lead properly is the lasting fix.

### Lead welding
Some lead details, complex shapes, gutters and areas where joins would otherwise be needed, benefit from welding rather than just dressing. Craig carries out Level 1 lead welding as part of his specialist lead work.

### Lead with a new roof
When a roof is being replaced or reslated, it's the right time to renew the lead too. Old lead left in place on a new roof can become the weak point.

### What to expect from your free quote
When you get in touch, Craig arranges a time to come and look at the roof. He'll go up, look at the problem properly and take photos so you can see exactly what he's seen, which matters on a part of your home you can't easily check yourself. You'll then get a clear price for the work, with no pressure and no obligation to go ahead. If something can be repaired rather than replaced, he'll tell you. If the roof is beyond repair, he'll explain why.

### Why a small, owner-led team makes a difference
Ericht Roofing is a small, hands-on team led by Craig. That means the person who quotes your job is the person responsible for doing it, and the person you phone if you have a question. There's no hand-off between a salesperson and a subcontractor you've never met. Customers pick up on this in their reviews: they describe Craig as honest, genuine, punctual and hard working, and many come back to him for further work.

### Preparing for the work
Before work starts, Craig will talk you through what's happening and roughly how long it will take. It helps to clear access to the side of the house where the work is being done, move cars away from the driveway if materials need to be dropped there, and let neighbours know if access passes their property. Throughout the job the team keeps the site tidy, a point customers mention again and again.
